Ex-Engine 10
Castle Beach Fire Department is proud to present Engine 10, a truly unique apparatus in the department as this is the only dual axle engine company that is also equipped with an elevated master stream. As the primary engine company at Station 10, Engine 10 is equipped for ARFF, structural protection, rescue, entrapment, hazmat, and medical emergencies. The 6x6 chassis allows the rig to access areas around the airport that do not have roads. The bumper mounted TFT monitor allows the apparatus to attack fires while the rig is in motion. Spray bars beneath the rig protect the apparatus from embers.

Ex-Rescue Platform 1
The brand new Rescue Platforms have arrived! Rescue Platforms play a vital role in the department as they are the only aerial devices with a platform or bucket. These apparatus are useful in situations requiring an elevated platform for rescue operations or master stream operations. Since both rescue platforms are not responding as first-due truck companies, they do not carry the standard complement of truck company tools; rather, they carry specialized equipment, such as collapse, high angle, or low angle rescue equipment. The department selected the 95' Aerialscope after having a trial run with a Rosenbauer T-Rex assigned to RP1 and an Aerialscope assigned to RP2 for two years. Despite the articulating jib, the Rosenbauer was not selected for department use as it required additional time to setup. Ultimately, the Aerialscope was selected due to its unmatched stability. The boom can extend 9 degrees below grade to 75 degrees above grade. It is also capable of a 1000 lb tip load while flowing 1000 gpm, unrestricted. When retracted, the boom can lift up to 5000 lbs.

Ex-Hazmat 1A
The second piece to Hazardous Materials Company 1 has arrived from Pierce MFG! With the large amount of equipment that the Hazardous Materials Team carries, this used apparatus was purchased in February 2017. This particular vehicle now hauls all the bulky Level A and B suits and the decontamination equipment that were previously stored in Mobile Lab 1 (former Decon 1). In addition, this rig also has containment vessels and absorbent for many chemicals. The compartments on top of the trailer provide extra space for long tools that would not fit in the transverse compartments. Rooftop access is achieved by a ladder stored on top of the trailer. This apparatus is a special call apparatus for large scale incidents or can be pressed into service if the need arises.

Ex-US&R 509
US&R 509 returns to Castle Beach Fire Department! Originally on a 2007 Pierce Velocity chassis, this apparatus first served as Rescue 1, then as US&R 1 before being replaced by the 2017 Pierce Quantum tiller rescue. The department then sold the apparatus to San Bricko, a nearby city. After serving San Bricko for nearly three years, the apparatus was slated to be sold as San Bricko underwent a complete apparatus overhaul. At this time, Castle Beach Fire was looking to purchase a ready reserve rescue/US&R apparatus, and the city decided to buy the rig back and refurbish the apparatus before returning to Castle Beach Fire Department. However, during the drive to the dealer, the apparatus was involved in a serious accident when a semi unwittingly turned into the cab. Fortunately, no one was injured by the accident, but the apparatus was a total loss. Since the driver of the semi was at fault, the city would not have to pay for the repairs to the rig. Once it arrived at the dealer, the body was repainted and a stock Pierce Arrow XT cab was mounted to the body.
At this point, US&R 509 will serve as a reserve rescue unit and will be housed at Station 9. However, if the need arises, callback rescue firefighters can be recalled, and this apparatus will be placed in service as US&R 9.

Ex-Heavy Rescue 2
After months of deliberation, Heavy Rescue 2 was purchased in mid 2017. With the many vehicles that pass through the interstates, the danger of collapses due to natural and man-made disasters, and various rescue situations, FDCB has purchased a 75-ton heavy duty rotator to lift heavy objects during rescue operations to increase the capabilities of the Urban Search and Rescue Task Force. In addition to the chains and other equipment for heavy lifting, HR2 will carry a set of Holmatro extraction tools, an acetylene torch, Paratech Struts, an airbag kit, and an on-board air compressor for the air-actuated tools.

Ex-Engine 201
Castle Beach Fire Department has placed this Seagrave Marauder II triple combination engine in service as Engine 201. As part of the busiest light force in the city, Engine 201, along with Truck 1, responds to nearly 15 calls a day! Engine 201 also showcases the 2021 CBFD triple combination spec, which moves away from the raised roof and interior ladder compartment. Since “200” series triples are paired with the truck company, there was no need for a raised roof because most of the members would be seated in the truck company. The ground ladders were moved to the outside of the rig once again as removing them on scene was not possible if another company pulled up behind the rig. This also freed up space for additional hoses to be stored on the rig. Engine 201 serves the downtown district of Castle Beach along with the rest of the apparatus housed at Station 1.

Builder’s note: I had a blast putting this rig together! I’m extremely thankful that I had a bunch of spare parts laying around, which allowed me to assemble this apparatus much sooner than expected. In addition to all the regular elements and details you’d find on one of my rigs such as the functional compartments or the small decals, I was also able to figure out how to eliminate the half-plate gap between the compartment above the wheel well and the rear wheel housing.

Ex-Truck 8, Ex-Truck 1
With the many hills, the department determined that a dual-axle tractor would have braking power as compared to the standard single-axle tractor. Truck 8 is the former Truck 1. Built on a 2017 Pierce Arrow XT chassis, Truck 8 is among the first dual-axle Ascendant tillers in the LFC. With this addition, Truck 8 is currently one of two Ascendant tillers in the fleet (the other being Truck 2). Although Truck 8 comes in at 56 ft in length, the apparatus can maneuver much easier than a rear-mount or mid-mount aerial thanks to the steering 5th wheel.

Former Engine 203
Engine 203 was the former 2015 Pierce Arrow XT that served as Engine 1. However, the apparatus was involved in an accident in late 2016, heavily damaging the cab. The manufacturer did an excellent job of updating the cab as well as the graphics package on the rig! The apparatus was then returned to Castle Beach Fire Department where it was placed in service as Engine 203, replacing an aging rig.

Truck 1 (moved and re-lettered to Truck 7)
Castle Beach Fire Department has taken delivery of a brand new Seagrave Capitol Tractor-drawn Aerial (TDA) and will be placing the rig in service as Truck 1. The former 2019 Seagrave Marauder II TDA will be reassigned to Truck 5. Although Truck 1 comes in at 61 ft in length, the apparatus can maneuver much easier than a rear-mount or mid-mount aerial thanks to the steering 5th wheel. As the busiest truck company in the city, Truck 1 sees action in downtown, the port, and the various freeways that connect Castle Beach to other municipalities. Per the Castle Beach Fire Department Truck Company Specification, this apparatus is a straight truck, carrying no water or hose. If necessary, a 3” monitor can be supplied by the 2-car and attached to the tip of the aerial for master stream operations. As part of the technical rescue team, this apparatus (along with Truck 2) has an A-frame gantry to assist with lifting heavy objects or for low angle rescues.

Rescue 1 (Revised March 2021)
Rescue 1 has received their latest rig, a 2019 Seagrave Marauder II/SVI heavy rescue! This rig replaces the 2017 Spartan Gladiator which will receive some minor upgrades before being placed back in service as Rehab/Command 3. Like the previous generation of rescues, this apparatus has a partial walk-in compartment that stores the wet/dry suits, ALS equipment, and forcible entry tools. Also, a custom slide out increases interior space for command purposes. Unlike the prior rigs, the side door to the walk-in compartment was eliminated as the crew primarily enters through the cab. This allowed design engineers to add storage solutions for high frequency tools. Another new change for the rig was to move the air compressor to the top of the rig to free up space in the compartments.
Rescue 1 is staffed by 6 men and responds to calls in the northern half of the city, while Rescue 2 handles the southern half. The compartments hold a wide variety of tools for various rescue applications including confined space rescue, high angle rescue, trench rescue, vehicle extrication, underwater/swift water rescue, and hazmat.

Former Hazmat 1
Castle Beach Fire Department is proud to present brand new Hazmat 1. Built on a 2019 Seagrave Marauder II cab with SVI bodywork, this rig was delivered on Jan. 26, 2019 and replaces the 2017 Spartan/SVI Hazmat rig, which will be moved to Station 4 where it will serve as a backup/reserve hazmat company. Like it’s predecessor, the new HM1 has a slide-out command center where planning can take place, a Flow Sciences biological safety cabinet to analyze foreign samples, and storage area for all the various suits. HM1 also carries a wide variety of meters and detection kits to fulfill the motto “In omnia paratus,” which literally means “ready for anything.” HM1 is supported by HM1a, which carries much of the decontamination equipment, waste containers, pumps, various robots, and additional tools and equipment for hazardous materials responses. HM1 and HM1a are staffed daily by 8 firefighters, all of whom are hazardous materials specialists.

Rescue Platform 2
FDCB is proud to present a very unique apparatus: Rescue Platform 2! It is unique due to the fact is one of very few remounted Aerialscopes on a Pierce Quantum Chassis. RP 2 was formerly Blue Hills Truck 1 prior to annexation of Castle Beach Fire where it was originally stationed at Station 7 as Truck 7.
Prior to the acquisition, Rescue Platform 2 was formerly a 1991 Mack CF with a 95 ft. Aerialscope. After serving the city for more than 20 years, the city of Blue Hills decided to refurbish the apparatus instead of buying a new Aerialscope. It was during this process that Castle Beach annexed Blue Hills. After extensive research, the department decided to have Pierce MFG refurbish the apparatus. To make this truck even more distinct from other remounts, the department specified the Aerialscope to be mounted onto the Pierce Quantum chassis. The department also changed the compartment doors from swing out style to customized roll up compartments. Also, a new pump was added and the water tank was removed to add storage space.
After nearly a year in service as Truck 7, the apparatus committee re-evaluated Truck 7 and determined that the lack of key equipment and ground ladders caused some issues on the fire ground in several incidents. In addition, maneuverability was a problem when setting up for aerial operations, especially in tight spaces. However, members loved the use of a platform for master stream operations as well as rescue operations, hence, the rig will be kept as a special call apparatus for 2nd alarm fires, just like Rescue Platform 1. The rig will be housed at Station 2 when the "new" Truck 7 arrives from refurbishment.
Technical specs:
2017 Pierce Quantum chassis/1991 Baker 95' Aerialscope
1500 gpm pump
No water/foam tank
Forcible entry tools
RIT/FAST tools
Complete Holmatro rescue system (Spreaders, cutters, rams, airbags)
2 PPV fans
Spill equipment
In addition, the apparatus carries 211 ft. of ground ladders. The complement consists of extension ladders, wall ladders, and roof ladders. The extension ladder complement consists of one 35 ft. ladder, one 14 ft. ladder, one 12 ft ladder, and one collapsible 10 ft. ladder. The wall ladder complement includes two 24 ft. ladders and two 16 ft. ladders. The roof ladder complement has one 20 ft. ladder, one 16 ft. ladder, and two 12 ft. ladders.

Rescue Platform 1
Rescue Platform 1 is a state of the art Rosenbauer T-Rex Articulating Platform that was modified in order to fit the narrow streets in Castle Beach! FDCB previously had a Bronto Skylift that the firefighters loved; however, the massive size of the vehicle, in conjunction with the weight of tools and number of responses as a front-line apparatus, took its toll rather quickly. With this in mind, the apparatus committee looked at several options to reduce the size and weight. The Snorkel was an attractive option at first, but the short aerial height and minimum side reach limited its applications. Then, one committee member brought up the idea of how most European platform trucks were on a single axle. In addition, since the proposed vehicle is not to be a first-due truck, it did not need to carry all the necessary equipment for truck operations (Ventilation, search and rescue, vehicle extrication, etc.). Hence, we inquired at several apparatus designers to see who would be able to develop a single axle chassis with an articulating platform. Of the companies that we talked to, only Rosenbauer submitted a bid and thus, became the designer for the rig. Since that time, several modifications were made so that the vehicle would be able to carry equipment for its primary goals (High angle rescue, Low angle rescue, Confined space rescue, rope rescue). Although this apparatus is cross-staffed by Rescue 1, a full-time engineer and firefighter are assigned to this vehicle so that it can respond when needed without Rescue 1 having to return to the station to pick it up.

Truck 10
Brand new Truck 10 has arrived from KME and will be placed into service shortly at Station 10 - CBX. As one can immediately tell, this rig is different than the other frontline truck companies at Castle Beach Fire Department. The most obvious difference is the color scheme. While the other truck companies are red with a white stripe, Truck 10 is lime green with a reflective blue stripe to aid in visualization as it is the first due truck company at CBX. Another huge difference is the fact that this is a quint. As the airport has many terminals and cargo areas, the potential for fire to spread to a large amount of space in a short time is a possible scenario that may occur. Hence, all the frontline suppression apparatus are equipped with a pump and tank to assist with fire alarms. Also, Truck 10 will be the second truck company (after Truck 5) to be fully staffed and will be a separate company from Engine 210. In addition, Truck 10 stores several of the Holmatro extraction equipment in the bumper as the large first compartment was replaced by the pump.

Mobile Lab 1
She's back! Originally serving as Rescue 1, the recently refurbished 1978 Mack CF returns to frontline service as Mobile Lab 1. This particular piece of apparatus operated as Rescue 1 for 12 years prior to being replaced by a 1990 Pierce Arrow Heavy Duty Rescue. Following this period, it was refurbished before being pressed into service as Hazmat 1 and served in that capacity until 2005. It was the reserve hazmat unit for almost 10 years before it was refurbished again in 2016. Despite many advances with scene lighting, electronic sirens, and the like, the department opted to keep as many details as original as possible. This included retaining the classic B&M Super Chief siren, Federal Signal Aerodynic halogen rotator lightbar, and repainting the compartment doors. Since this apparatus is cross-staffed by Hazmat 1, there was no need for the department to close the open cab, which in turn, saved the department a couple thousand dollars. Upgrades to the apparatus included a new Detroit Diesel DD13 engine and a new rear door for the walk-in compartment. Responding in tandem with Hazmat 1, Mobile Lab 1 contains machines that can help identify substances the hazmat team may encounter. Also stored here are the MSDS data sheets and valuable information for many chemicals that routinely pass through the city.

US&R 2
Hazmat 1a
With the large amount of equipment that the Hazardous Materials Team carries, this used apparatus was purchased in February 2017.
Technical Specs:
2006 Kenworth tractor/ Hackney 40.5 ft trailer
Level A and B fully encapsulated suits
Decontamination equipment (showers, tents, containment vessels)
Containment vessels (From 1 gallon containers to 55 gallon drums)
Absorbent for spills (oil and chemicals)
Various meters and detecting kits
Radioactive suits and meters

Engine 204
Brand new Engine 204 arrived from Spartan ERV Tuesday, September 27, 2016. That same day, FDNY Battalion Chief Fahy died while operating at a structure fire in the Bronx. A couple days prior, Lieutenant Leach and Firefighter Fickles from the Wilmington, DE Fire Department died from injuries sustained at a collapse at a structure fire. Because of these terrible tragedies, the shop mechanics added the iconic FDNY stripes to this apparatus to commemorate those who have given their all!
Engine 204 replaces the current E204, which will be relegated to Engine 4. The addition of another suppression company was needed after statistics showed an increase in call volume. The design of this rig was to increase firefighter safety while operating at any scene. This is evident in the traffic control lightbar on the driver's side, the officer's side, and rear of the apparatus.
Technical Specs:
2016 Spartan Gladiator Transformer Triple Combination
Cummins 500 ISX - Allison 4000 EVS transmission
1500 gpm Hale pump
HyPro Foam 2001 Foam System
500 gal. water
20 gal. Class A foam tank
Standard engine company equipment

Former Truck 6
As of June 30, 2017, this apparatus will be sold to a nearby local department as it will be replaced by former Truck 1. The reason for the change is due to the fact that this apparatus was large and sometimes too cumbersome to make turns our tillers can handle without a sweat. Furthermore, due to the equipment cache, the frame was starting to give mechanics some fits.
This monster of a ladder truck previously served Sequoia Fire Department as Truck 1. After the annex, this apparatus was reassigned to Truck 6.
After a visit to the shops, Truck 6 was retrofitted with equipment specified in the SOP. However, since this truck contains less space than the tillers, it does not carry the same amount of ground ladders, bulky rescue/hazmat equipment, and one of the required 3 PPV fans. Like the rest of the truck companies, the driver's side was structured to carry truck company equipment, while the officer's side was designed to store rescue tools. The driver's side contains forcible entry tools, salvage materials, roof saws, K-12 saws, reciprocating saws, salvage equipment, ropes, RIT equipment, and 2 large fans for ventilation. The officer's side contains one complete Hurst extrication equipment, a Stokes basket, a crash kit, a Hydra-ram, bolt cutters, a large amount of cribbing, a 375-ton 14-piece air bag set, Hurst shoring equipment, pneumatic drills and saws. This truck also carries some basic Hazmat equipment due to the station's proximity to the interstate.
In addition, the apparatus carries 211 ft. of ground ladders. The complement consists of extension ladders, wall ladders, and roof ladders. The extension ladder complement consists of one 35 ft. ladder, one 14 ft. ladder, one 12 ft ladder, and one collapsible 10 ft. ladder. The wall ladder complement includes two 24 ft. ladders and two 16 ft. ladders. The roof ladder complement has one 20 ft. ladder, one 16 ft. ladder, and two 12 ft. ladders.
This truck, along with Engine 206 (Former Sequoia Engine 2) will be assigned the call sign Light Force 6 and will respond in tandem to all calls. Also, when Engine 6 (Former Sequoia Engine 1), Engine 106, and Truck 6 are responding, they will be known as Task Force 6.
Technical Specifications:
2013 Pierce Arrow XT 10-man cab
100' Heavy Duty Rear Mount Tower Ladder
470 HP Detroit Diesel DD13 engine
TAK-4 Independent Front Suspension
1500 gpm Stang Monitor
Inspired by the following rigs/people:
City of Miami, FL Truck 1

Nate Larsen's Truck 4
*Builder's note*
In case you are wondering, the four of the first five compartments (the large compartment ahead of the stabilizers, the tiny cabinet above the stabilizers, and the two smaller compartments behind the stabilizers) are all connected via SNOT. The rear compartment opens and allows storage of the ground ladders. I'm really pleased by the outcome of this rig!

Former Engine 205 - "Never Forget"
Because of the high demands in Station 5's coverage, FDCB purchased a used 2008 Pierce Saber PUC from the local Pierce dealer! After a light refurb and a new paint job, Engine 205 will begin service on September 11, 2016 at 8:46 AM as a way to commemorate the 9/11 attacks. I cannot believe that it has been 15 years since that fateful day. Words cannot express what I and many other people felt that day. May we never forget those who lost their lives!
Unlike other stations, each of the suppression companies (E5, E205, and T5) at Station 5 will run independently of each other. However, Truck 5 can be paired with either E5 or E205 to form a light force as needed, or the 3 apparatus can be respond as a task force when requested.
