05-24-17: Abandoned Structure Fire
Early this morning, Castle Beach Fire was alerted to an abandoned structure fire amongst a row of 1-2 story small commercials. Bystanders reported a man running from the building minutes prior to the building catching on fire. Occupants of the nearby building also were able to escape. Task Force 1 was first on scene and began to prepare for entry into the fire building, as there were reports of squatters who may have been in the structure. However, before firefighters were able to enter, an explosion occurred, knocking back the three interior firefighters. A mayday was transmitted, and firefighters quickly came to the rescue of their brothers. Fortunately, all were wearing PPE (including the breathing apparatus) and did not receive any life-threatening injuries. All three were checked out by paramedics and were later transported to Castle Beach University Hospital for further evaluation. They are expected to be released sometime this afternoon. Meanwhile, firefighters switched to a defensive operation as the building was not worth saving anymore. Several 2.5" hoses, ladder pipes, and the Snozzle from Satellite 1 were used to extinguish the inferno. It took approximately 50 minutes for 70 firefighters to fully put out the fire. Even though the building is declared as a total loss, no lives were lost in the blaze. Those with information concerning the fire today are encouraged to contact Castle Beach Police.

05-20-17: Training
Today, recruits had the wonderful opportunity to be taught basic tools on the truck company. The pictures show members of Task Force 1 educating Recruit Joe Smith on some tools found on a truck company, including ground ladders, extraction equipment, forcible entry tools, and saws. Recruit Joe also had the unique chance to climb the 100' ladder! It looks like recruit Joe is ready for the next step in becoming a firefighter!
